Opening to Scream

Different types of shots are used they use long shots to show scenery and to show the tense moments. Close ups are used on the characters to show her facial expressions more clear. They use many different types of shots in the opening of this film, i think this is clever because it makes us get a better film for the characters and it builds suspense and makes us more worried for the character.
They vary the shot pace so that it brings more tension when it is meant to be more tense there will be longer shots so that you start to get more anxious where as when she is happy and does not know what is going to happen short shots are used so we understand that something is happening.
This film you can instantly tell is aimed towards teenagers and adults due to a large amount of jump scenes and a bit of cursing, also it is not good for a child to be watching films like this as it would give them nightmares.
We understand in the opening few minutes that this film is a horror. There are many conventions being shown in this opening scene which make us understand the genre of the film. The voice of the man on the phone has a creepy tone and we initially understand him to be different to any other person. Also usually in a horror film lots of objects in the house make noises. When the man on the phone tells the woman not to hang up the phone but she does in fear the door bell rings, this is done so that we know there is someone outside and makes us worried. Fear is one of the conventions in a horror film. We usually associate a dark night with bad things like bats and usually bad things happen in the dark so due to it being a dark night we realize something bad is about to happen. We also get little parts which show us the real conventions of this horror film. When she picks up the Knife, knives are usually associated with killing and in a horror film people usually get killed by knives.
I believe that the opening to this film is very good as it does everything you want a horror film to do. It made me worried it made me jump and most importantly it created suspense! I also believe that everything is done for a reason and that we get the impression that after everything she does it builds up more suspense
